Join USRowing’s Chief of Community Engagement Jennie Trayes as she hosts DEI Committee Member and Capital Rowing masters rower June Marshall. Growing up in Houston, Texas, June participated in many team sports throughout her formative years. Through the Olympics and a her father’s brief stint on the Howard University rowing team, June was aware of the sport of rowing but never had the opportunity to participate herself, mainly due to geographic constraints. That all changed in 2013 when she sought out rowing in the DC area and participated in a learn to row program at Capital Rowing Club. Almost ten years later, June’s involvement and love of the sport continues to grow and evolve. June’s story begs the question, what kept her in the sport despite seeing very few BIPOC masters athletes in boathouses and at regattas across the country? Through June’s story we’ll examine key takeaways for how to make your masters programs more welcoming and inclusive to ALL.
